Yep, you heard it right – eco-friendly fonts are totally a thing, and they’ve been quietly reducing the impact of marketing assets, one project at a time.
With this in mind, when it came to designing the brand for our Design Agency, oodle, environmental sensitivity was at the forefront of our minds. The ‘oo’ within the oodle logo is also used as an icon and is made of outlines rather than solid characters. This reduces ink when printed and uses fewer pixels when viewed on screen, which in turn consumes less energy. The primary colour palette is black and white, which again reflects sustainable thinking. When printing, we use black on white, using less ink, and when on screen, we use white on black, which requires fewer pixels and less energy.
When it comes to designing projects for our clients, we keep this same thinking in mind. The choice of font really does make a difference. The weight, size, and spacing of a font affect ink usage, production speed, and how much text you can fit onto a page. So, opting for lighter-weight, narrower fonts with simple styling saves resources.
But wait, it gets better! There are fonts out there specifically designed to be eco-warriors. Take Ryman Eco, for example. This font, brought to you by the stationery pros we all know and love, uses a whopping 33% less ink than standard fonts. And if you’re feeling adventurous, Ecofont Sans is another option with its nifty little ink-saving trick – tiny holes within each letter to reduce ink coverage.
Now do you get it? We’re all about maintaining brand consistency, whilst ensuring your printed assets have a minimal carbon footprint, and a maximum impact with your contacts. Choosing an eco-friendly font can send a powerful message about your ethical values and decision-making process.
